At Marriott Cancun, An All-Inclusive Resort, a wristband is your room key and method of payment. No more fumbling in your pocket for a credit card shaped piece of plastic that you have to pull out to unlock your room, and no more worrying about setting the key card down and walking off without it. Instead, the Marriott Cancun provides a small wristband to each guest during check-in to serve as an identifier and room key. The bracelet can also be used for purchases at the gift shop and a la carte restaurants.
The wristband is a soft string bracelet with a Marriott RFID chip that contains the information for your room key. Once placed on your wrist and tightened, it cannot easily be loosened and removed, but it can be tightened more thanks to a plastic coupler with teeth that point just one way. This is helpful for making sure you, or your child, don’t lose the bracelet. If you do lose it, there is a hefty fee that you must pay for a replacement. Upon checkout, they will cut the bracelet off your arm to collect the key and prevent any additional charges.
The bracelet is waterproof, so don’t worry about taking it in the pool, hot tub, ocean, or shower. However, the wristband tanline is a real risk. If you can, have them make it loose enough that you can easily move/slide it around your wrist, or even transfer it from one wrist to the other. Another bit of advice, have them initially install it on your larger wrist to make it easiest to move to your smaller wrist if you decide to do so.
The circular RFID chip is white with a red and black Marriott logo. The string comes in different colors and signifies your status with the Marriott Bonvoy program. The gold/copper string color shown in the above photo is for Marriott Bonvoy members. Non-members get a black string with the same white RFID tag. Children under the age of 18, not old enough to consume alcohol, have a blue tinted chip in place of the white. Note that if the person booking the room has Bonvoy status level, everyone else staying in the room, regardless of their status, will receive the same color wristband.
Marriott Bonvoy status is earned annually by staying a certain number of nights in Marriott branded hotels. Silver requires 10 nights. Gold requires 25 nights. Platinum requires 50 nights. Titanium requires 75 nights. Ambassador status requires 100 nights and $23,000 USD of qualifying spend. You can also earn status through credit cards. For example, the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant from American Express provides Platinum status. It does however require a $650 annual fee.
